Smart Locks During a Power Outage: What Happens, and How to Be Ready
The most common question asked before buying a digital lock is: "If the power goes out or the battery dies, will I be locked out?" Short answer: no — as long as the lock is designed properly.
The electronics run on battery power
Smart locks use an internal battery to power the fingerprint sensor, face recognition, keypad, and Wi-Fi connection — meaning they don't depend on grid power, and a home power outage doesn't disrupt the lock's day-to-day operation.
A mechanical key, always the physical fallback
For the moment the battery fully dies, models like PROLOCK PR-610F and PROLOCK PR-520F have an independent mechanical key cylinder — meaning even in the worst case, there's always a physical, power-independent way in. Keeping a copy of that key somewhere accessible (not just inside the locked space) is part of a proper preparedness plan.
A few simple recommendations
- Take the low-battery warning in the app seriously and replace the battery ahead of time, not after the final alert.
- Always keep a spare mechanical key somewhere outside the locked area.
- Test the mechanical key at regular intervals (say, every few months) so you're not caught off guard when you actually need it.
With this simple preparation, a power outage or dead battery is no longer a real concern for using a digital lock.
